Sport for Life is thrilled to add Catherine Carty to its lineup of keynote speakers for the upcoming International Physical Literacy Conference (IPLC) 2019 in Winnipeg, which runs May 7–10. A leading voice on the topic of inclusion, Carty is a researcher and advocate at the global level who is working to transform the lives of people with disabilities through physical education, sport, recreation, and fitness.
Currently, Carty works as the UNESCO chair manager for an inclusion task force, as well as leading a globally-focused centre that aims to ensure the realization of physical education, physical activity, and sport sectors, aligning them with the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. She directs the strategic operations of the academic and research team, and works closely with UNESCO and across the UN system. Her work brings her into contact with civic society, academia, and both governmental and non-governmental agencies.
One of Sport for Life’s guiding principles is that inclusion is non-negotiable. During her keynote address, Carty will share her insights from the front-lines of global inclusion initiatives. She will outline ways the various sectors have improved when it comes to making sure all participants are included, and talk about the continued work that needs to be done in this area. As one of the people working with the World Health Organization on the development of a monitoring framework for the Global Action Plan on Physical Activity, she’s uniquely situated to give attendees a glimpse into a brighter future we’re hoping to build for people with disabilities and ultimately every person on the planet.
